The Catholic education community is grieving the loss of James Ryan, a distinguished teacher, advocate, and former president of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA). Ryan’s life was defined by his relentless pursuit of excellence in education and his unwavering dedication to social justice. Ryan’s teaching career was as diverse as it was impactful.
From elementary and high school classrooms to serving as a special education resource teacher, he demonstrated a commitment to meeting the needs of every student. His role at Sunnybrook Hospital’s adolescent psychiatric division highlighted his ability to connect with and support vulnerable youth. Ryan’s academic credentials, which include a history degree from the University of Guelph, a Bachelor of Education from Memorial University, and a Master of Education from the University of Toronto, reflect his deep-seated passion for education.
As a leader within OECTA, Ryan’s influence was profound. He held every executive role except treasurer and contributed significantly to committees on political advisory, human rights, and collective bargaining. His leadership was marked by his steadfast belief in the value of publicly funded Catholic education and his commitment to advocating for the rights of teachers and students alike.
Ryan’s personal life was a testament to his faith and values. Residing in Toronto with his wife, Kim, and attending St. Edith Stein parish, he exemplified the principles of service and community. His colleagues remember him as a man who “led with his heart” and whose generosity and kindness left a lasting impression on all who knew him. An advocate for LGBTQ2SI+ members and students, Ryan was a trailblazer in promoting inclusion and equity within Catholic education.
His passion for social justice and the labour movement further underscored his belief in the dignity and potential of every individual. James Ryan’s passing is a profound loss to the Catholic education community, but his legacy of service, advocacy, and compassion will continue to inspire future generations. His life was a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have when they dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to the betterment of others.
