The Bloomington community is mourning the loss of Janis M. Stockhouse, the beloved retired Director of Bands at Bloomington High School North, who passed away recently. Janis dedicated an impressive 38 years to nurturing the musical talents of countless students, leaving an indelible mark on the local arts scene.
Graduating from the prestigious Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Stockhouse honed her skills under the tutelage of renowned instructors, including trumpet icons William Adam and Louis Davidson. With a Master’s degree from Indiana State University and mentorship from esteemed figures like David N. Baker and William Revelli, she was not just an accomplished musician but also an inspiring educator.
At Bloomington High School North, Ms. Stockhouse conducted various ensembles, including the Symphonic Band and the Advanced Jazz Ensemble. Her dedication to her craft bore fruit, with her jazz bands performing at prominent events, such as the Midwest International Band & Orchestra Clinic and the North Sea Jazz Festival. She also took the Cougar Marching Band to epic events like the Tournament of Roses Parade and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Beyond her success in the classroom, Janis received numerous accolades, including the 1997 Outstanding Music Educator of the Year by IMEA and the David Baker Indiana Jazz Educator of the Year in 2016. Her contributions to music education extended far beyond her role at Bloomington North, serving as past president of the Indiana Bandmasters Association and a key member of several professional organizations.
As the community reflects on Janis’ considerable achievements and the joy she brought through music, her legacy endures in the hearts and musical journeys of her former students. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for her unwavering dedication to music education and the profound impact she had on so many lives.
