CAL FIRE is mourning the loss of one of its most respected leaders, Captain Jason Craig, who passed away recently while off-duty. Captain Craig, a longtime member of the Riverside Unit, leaves behind a legacy of excellence, leadership, and a profound dedication to both his profession and community. His death is a tragic reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve to protect others.
Jason’s distinguished career with CAL FIRE began in 2004 when he started as a Firefighter I with the San Bernardino Unit. From those early days, it was evident that Jason’s passion for service and his ability to lead would shape his career trajectory. Over the years, he rose through the ranks to become Firefighter II-Paramedic, Engineer-Paramedic, and eventually Fire Captain-Paramedic in the Riverside Unit.
In 2018, Captain Craig transitioned to the South Ops Riverside division, where he stepped into a leadership role in the Intelligence (Intel) program. In this capacity, he played a key role in supporting CAL FIRE’s statewide operations, becoming an expert in gathering, analyzing, and disseminating vital information during wildfire and emergency response efforts.
His leadership in the Report on Conditions Cadre, Intel Policy and Procedure Cadre, and his work as an Intel Duty Officer helped shape critical operational procedures that have impacted firefighting efforts across the state. Beyond his operational contributions, Jason’s commitment to his fellow firefighters was demonstrated through his 12 years of service to the CAL FIRE Local 2881 Honor Guard.
As the South Area Leader, Jason helped honor the memory and sacrifices of fallen firefighters, symbolizing the unity and strength of the CAL FIRE family. Captain Craig’s impact on the department was immeasurable. He was a mentor to many, always willing to share his knowledge and experience with others.
He led with integrity, professionalism, and a deep sense of duty. His colleagues remember him as someone who not only excelled in his work but also as a friend and mentor who made a lasting impact on everyone he met. Jason’s passing is deeply felt by his family, friends, and colleagues.
He is survived by his parents and his daughter, Mackenzie, who was a source of immense pride and joy in his life. The CAL FIRE community has come together to honor Jason’s memory, with flags being flown at half-staff in his honor at Southern Region offices in Riverside and Fresno. Staff at these locations are also authorized to shroud badges until sunset on the day of his memorial service.
Captain Jason Craig’s contributions to CAL FIRE will never be forgotten. His legacy of service, leadership, and camaraderie will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless firefighters he mentored and inspired. Though he is no longer with us, the impact of his work and the example he set will continue to guide those who follow in his footsteps. CAL FIRE will forever remember Captain Craig as a true leader who dedicated his life to the service of others.
